Why are some individuals more apt to lose weight and maintain their weight, than others? Interestingly, it may not always be attributed to how much they may diet and exercise, it may simply be a matter of genetics, hormonal imbalances and lifestyle, just to name a few.
Let's first take into consideration, genetics as it relates to body type. There are three basic body types: Ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph. The first, being a thin body type; Second, an athletic body and lastly, a body type with extra body fat.
So, what does this have to do, with weight loss and weight management? Well we all know that it's easier for a thinner person to stay lean and an athletic body, to in essence, achieve the same. However, the endomorphic body can struggle in this aspect, right?
Let's examine several theories. First, the set-point, theory. This theory suggests that our bodies will constantly strive for homeostasis, in that it strives to remain at a certain weight and body fat level, that's conducive for normal bodily functioning- this is its comfort area. This is perhaps the reason that someone may lose weight/body fat, they will most likely revert back to their previous body weight and body fat percentage.
A second theory, worth examining is the S.A.I.D. theory (principle). Aka, Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands. This suggests that our bodies will simply become so accustomed to one training modality over another and may fail to produce desired results.
As aforementioned, hormones may also play a very significant role in weight loss and maintenance. Leptin, the "satiety" hormone situates itself in your body fat. When you're full, it sends signals to the brain, indicating you do not require any more food and that you have enough body fat for proper bodily functionality. However, sometimes this signaling, doesn't work properly- such that, you simply won't know when you're full. Similarly, as a result of extra body fat, you most likely will have an increased amount of leptin. This may result in a sensitivity or more appropriately, an insensitivity, to the extent your body may actually perceive itself as falling into a starvation mode. When this occurs, the stress hormone, cortisol is triggered and released and more body fat accumulates.
So what are the remedies for sufficient, long lasting weight loss and weight maintenance? The key is a conscious and consistent lifestyle, change. The more body fat you lose, the less you may incur a hormonal imbalance.
